The Lehigh Valley Cement Industry $17.57 America's portland cement industry began in the Lehigh Valley. The rich deposit of limestone known as the Jacksonburg Formation arcs through the valley from Berks County, Pennsylvania, to Warren County, New Jersey, and today it still provides the raw material for the Lehigh district's famous high-quality portland cement. Cement from the Lehigh Valley built America's skyscrapers, dams, and highways. The Lehigh Valley Cement Industry documents not only the quarries and cement mills but also the dozens of companies that sprang up to supply and support the industry. The photographs also tell the stories of the people who formed the cement communities -- the entrepreneurs, executives, engineers, and immigrants whose legacies live on in the five multinational companies still making cement in the valley. |

The Lehigh Valley Railroad Across New Jersey $21.45 Constructed as the Easton and Amboy Railroad and opened by 1875, the Lehigh Valley Railroad was instrumental in developing the commerce and communities of central New Jersey through which it once ran. Originally built to haul unending trains of ablack diamondsa from Pennsylvania to Perth Amboy, the Lehigh Valley Railroad became so much more than a conduit for shipping coal. In building across the state, it became instrumental in not only hauling produce to New York City markets but also for providing service to companies like Johns-Manville and Lionel Trains. From Phillipsburg to Jersey City and all points in between, the Lehigh Valley Railroad hauled freight and passengers, while at the same time contributing to the social fabric of the area. The Lehigh Valley Railroad across New Jersey paints a picture of a railroad that provided over 100 years of quality service to the Garden State. |

Is It Organic? $31.98 Sorry friends. What you think about organic food is mostly wrong. The global organic industrial-complex promises everything and delivers nothing. But don't blame organic farmers They're victims, along with millions of consumers.Being organic is no longer about farming fields. It's about filling forms. Your taxes underwrite this marketing subterfuge and help drive a stake into the heart of the most efficient food system ever known. Who's behind this? You'll be surprised.Organic farming began in England as a Christian movement. Organic farmers in the United States and Canada overwhelmingly identify as conservatives, and until 1997 their industry actually had a sound scientific basis, subject to free-market rules with no government interference. But you'll never hear about that from the pro-organic media, or about the key role Presidents H.W. and G.W. Bush played in vaulting organics from hippie movement to multi-billion-dollar industry. Is it Organic? is a tell-all history by an industry insider who saw too much to keep quiet. Organics can get back to basics by producing food using age-old methods like natural composting, or it can be ruled by banality, fraud and eco-politics.As far as government and urban activists are concerned, farmers, the environment and consumers are mere afterthoughts. And, like it or not, you're footing the bill. |

Hudson Valley Harvest $4.98 A food-lover's guide to the farms, local foods, open-air markets, restaurants, and regional cuisine of New York's historic and bountiful Hudson River Valley. New York's scenic Hudson Valley, a bucolic land of farms and vineyards, is often compared to California's Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Each year more than 1 million people visit the area, drawn as much by its culinary and agricultural attractions as its spectacular scenery, historic architecture, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The small family farms, vineyards, and orchards of the Hudson Valley produce artisanal cheese, pasture-raised poultry and meats, handcrafted wines, and organic produce. They supply local restaurants and farmers' markets and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, as well as the restaurants and Greenmarkets of New York City, only 90 miles away. Hudson Valley Harvest is a sourcebook for those who live, weekend, and vacation in the Hudson Valley. Interviews and profiles of farmers and specialty producers round out specific information on farm festivals, events, and family activities. The author provides an up-to-date guide and schedule to farmers markets and seasonal farmstands, as well as a guide to regional restaurants. |

Food $21.18 Shortlisted for the 2008 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. Food is essential to our sense of place and our sense of self, but today--as fast food nation meets the slow food movement and eating locally collides with on-demand arugula--our food habits are shifting. Food examines and imagines these changes, with projects by writers and artists that explore the cultural and emotional resonance of food, from the "everyday Dada" of mashed potatoes and Jell-O to the rocket science of food eaten by astronauts in space. In "Food, " an artist photographs everything he ate in 2006 (and some things he didn't eat, including "Food I Left in the Fridge Too Long") and finds the results both "seductive and repulsive"; a writer describes the global agro-assembly line that produces an organic bento box for Japanese commuters containing rice and vegetables from California, pork from Mexico, and salmon from Alaska; a short story writer offers an eight-page graphic novel, "Eating in Cafeterias;" a landscape architect compares a commercial orange with an organic apple using visualized data; an award-winning New York City food writer tells a postmodern tale about small-town Chinese-American cuisine (featuring chop suey, egg rolls, and flaming lava cocktails); an expert explains the principles of urban food sustainability. Other projects include a map of the free food from fruit trees on public land in a Los Angeles neighborhood, a visionary plan for farms in skyscrapers, and a surprising report on food security. The essays, artwork, and stories in "Food" offer readers a full menu of intellectual nourishment and aesthetic delight. |

Are "organic, "made with organic, and "100% organic foods different? And most importantly, is organic food better for me and my family? Organic Food in German Michelin Star Restaurants $56.69 The aim of this work is to investigate why German Michelin Star restaurants offer organic food. The purpose was to examine the motivation and reasons of German Michelin Star restaurants for offering organic food to their customers. This work is divided into five main parts of study, namely literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion. Both primary and secondary researches were undertaken for the study. The secondary research focused on both organic food and Michelin Star restaurants. The Guide Michelin is a well known ranking system focusing on quality gastronomy; hence it becomes obvious that restaurants mainly focus on high quality and customers' choice. The German market is nowadays the most important market for organic products in the world. Further, it is quite hard to define organic food as standards differ worldwide. The primary research consisted on carrying out an email questionnaire to 225 German Michelin Star restaurants, which has been limited by having conducted the questionnaire during the busiest time period resulting that only one Star Michelin restaurants responded; hence the aim of this study can not be answered completely.Considering the customers view, it is noticeable that the majority of consumers demanding organic food are younger, educated, sophisticated customers, who are willing to pay premium prices for high quality products. The results found out, that Michelin Star restaurants are focused on both improving their product quality and on achieving a high level of customer satisfaction. This indicates a main reason why German Michelin Star restaurants offer organic food with their aim to improve the quality of their products and flavour. |

Tomorrow's Table: Organic Farming, Genetics, and the Future of Food $35.4 By the year 2050, Earth's population will double. If we continue with current farming practices, vast amounts of wilderness will be lost, millions of birds and billions of insects will die, and the public will lose billions of dollars as a consequence of environmental degradation. Clearly, there must be a better way to meet the need for increased food production. Written as part memoir, part instruction, and part contemplation, Tomorrow's Table argues that a judicious blend of two important strands of agriculture--genetic engineering and organic farming--is key to helping feed the world's growing population in an ecologically balanced manner. Pamela Ronald, a geneticist, and her husband, Raoul Adamchak, an organic farmer, take the reader inside their lives for roughly a year, allowing us to look over their shoulders so that we can see what geneticists and organic farmers actually do. The reader sees the problems that farmers face, trying to provide larger yields without resorting to expensive or environmentally hazardous chemicals, a problem that will loom larger and larger as the century progresses. They learn how organic farmers and geneticists address these problems. This book is for consumers, farmers, and policy decision makers who want to make food choices and policy that will support ecologically responsible farming practices. It is also for anyone who wants accurate information about organic farming, genetic engineering, and their potential impacts on human health and the environment. |
